Grassland Restoration

@ Brockwell Park, London

Grassland restoration at Brockwell Park by FGS Agri

Project Overview

FGS Agri was appointed by Lambeth Council to undertake post-event land remediation and grassland restoration at Brockwell Park, one of London’s most significant historic parks. Following a major public event, our specialist teams restored worn and compacted ground using advanced turf care equipment, helping return the park to a safe, healthy and visually attractive condition while supporting its long-term biodiversity objectives.

As a Grade II listed historic park and Borough Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), Brockwell Park requires sensitive management that balances heavy public use with environmental stewardship. Our restoration programme formed part of the park’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality green spaces and enhancing biodiversity.

Project Requirements

Following the event, large areas of the park required remedial works to restore grass cover, relieve soil compaction and improve ground conditions ready for continued public use.

Key project requirements included:

  • Restore heavily trafficked grassland following a large-scale public event
  • Relieve soil compaction to improve drainage and root development
  • Reinstate damaged turf through reseeding
  • Minimise disruption within a busy public park
  • Support the park’s long-term biodiversity and landscape management objectives

The Solution

FGS Agri deployed specialist low ground pressure equipment to complete a comprehensive programme of land remediation and grassland restoration. Temporary trackway mats were installed to protect surrounding ground during operations, allowing machinery to access damaged areas while minimising further disturbance.

Using a specialist Verti-Drainer, compacted soils were aerated to improve soil structure, drainage and root development. Areas were then levelled where required before being reseeded using precision grass establishment equipment to encourage rapid recovery and create resilient, healthy turf.

The restoration works complemented Lambeth Council’s wider biodiversity programme, supporting the reinstatement of high-quality grassland alongside new wildflower areas and tree planting that contribute to the ecological value of Brockwell Park.

The Outcome

The project successfully restored heavily worn event areas, improving ground conditions and accelerating grass establishment ready for continued public use. Soil aeration and targeted reseeding helped create stronger, healthier turf while reducing long-term compaction issues.

By combining specialist machinery with practical land management expertise, FGS Agri delivered a sensitive restoration programme appropriate for one of London’s most valued historic parks. The works supported both the operational needs of the park and Lambeth Council’s wider ambitions to enhance biodiversity, improve landscape resilience and maintain attractive, functional green spaces for millions of annual visitors.
