The Client
Viridor stands out as a prominent player in the waste and recycling landscape of the UK. Working with over 150 Local Authority and corporate clients, the company boasts a team of over 3,000 workers. Operating from a network of 300 facilities, Viridor’s impact resonates across recycling, energy recovery, and landfill sectors, solidifying its position as a key contributor to sustainable waste management in the region.
Viridor’s Beddington ERF site is an energy from waste plant built in 2019. The facility not only offers a secure solution but also a cost-effective one, serving the South London Waste Partnership and regional businesses as a sustainable alternative to traditional landfill practices.
The Challenge
The Beddington site was looking to transform the site of the previous office building into a woodland area for staff and wildlife to enjoy. Former offices to the south of the ERF and weighbridge were demolished to remove above ground structures, decommission minor utilities and decompact/remove concrete and large stone from 400mm below current ground level. Leaving FGS Agri with a subsoil of decompacted sand and gravel to begin our transformation.
Our Role
In this early stage of the project FGS Agri had been contacted to supply and apply top and subsoils in readiness for woodland planting in early 2024. FGS Agri supplied British Standard compliant top and subsoils to achieve 20-25 cm placed depth, spreading across three groups within the work area. Careful handling was undertaken in sufficiently dry conditions to ensure no damage to the soils from compaction.
A tracked excavator was used to complete the soil placement produced as well as articulated lorries delivering subsoil and topsoil to the site. Soil placement was optimised to ensure the successful growth and development of the soon to be planted woody shrubs, wildflowers and broadleaf trees.
